Soon after acquiring drivers’ licenses, my friends and I spent summers exploring mountain roads. Hours would fly by in those beautiful Carolina backwoods. We felt as though we were in a foreign country. A friend had a convertible and we’d play the tape player full blast. One carefree evening was over early when we ran over a skunk. I’ve been lucky enough to avoid the handsome, but harsh on the nose fellows since.
