The Valerie H. Schindler Wildlife Center allowed me to photograph and sketch while sitting in the outdoor structures holding raptors. I’m not very fearful of wildlife, but this was intimate. The birds watched me carefully, sometimes after squawking and beating their wings. I felt guilty, disrupting the nocturnal birds, who seemed to ask me what on earth I was doing, just with their eyes. I’d never seen a Barred Owl before. They apparently frequent roadsides beyond their forested homes, where rodents are easier to hunt.
