Angel Oak, Southern Live Oak, Quercus virginiana
When I lived at Folly Beach in ’78, it was hidden in weeds. A few years later it had a fence around it. The City of Charleston gained ownership in 1991. Angel was the former landowners’ name. This tree is one of the few with a park and a visitor center! According to angeloaktree.com it’s 66.5 ft tall, measures 28 ft in circumference, and produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet. From tip to tip its longest branch distance is 187 ft.
